Brian arrived at the San Francisco airport two hours before his flight to Paris. He was wearing three shirts, a jacket, two pairs of socks, a pair of shorts, and two pairs of jeans. He had no luggage, except for one small backpack that looked like it was about to burst. Brian needed to meet a man named Tony before he checked in for his flight. He found Tony near the Air France counter, where he gave Brian a round-trip ticket and a small package. ? Give this package to Jean-Paul at the airport in Paris, Tony said. Jean-Paul is a very tall gentleman with short, brown hair. He will have a sign with your name on it. You dont have any luggage, right? ? Only this backpack, Brian answered. You said I could bring one carry-on bag. ? Thats right. One carry-on bag is fine. Have a good trip. ? Thanks. ? Is Brian a criminal? Not at all! In fact, Brian is an air-courier. He paid only $110 for the round-trip ticket to Paris, and this seems impossible. The reality, though, is that air-couriers get cheap airline tickets because they take important packages and papers to foreign countries, normally when businesses need these things to arrive the next day. While it is certainly not cheap for a business to send a package with an air-courier company, it is very quick. Instead of luggage, couriers often have packages for the air-courier company; sometimes the packages get checked, and sometimes the air-couriers carry them so that they dont lose time waiting for their baggage to be taken off the airplane. They go through customs quickly with an air-courier. In contrast, if a package is sent in the mail, it could be in customs for many days while officials decide if the item needs to be taxed. ?
