UGEA2150C 中國文化及其哲學 Chinese Culture and Its Philosophies 2017-18 Second Term Instructor: Dr. WANG Xiaohong (lianwxh@) Period: H 3-4 Location: NAH 11 COURSE DESCRIPTION This course introduces the philosophical thought of Confucianism, Daoism and Buddhism and thus provides students an access to the roots of Chinese culture. It covers a wide range of topics and explores Chinese culture in a comparative approach. Other Chinese philosophical thoughts such as Mohism and Legalism may also be covered. LEARNING OUTCOMES Upon completion of this course, students should be able to  Identify the central ideas of major schools of traditional Chinese philosophy and explain their connections to other major aspects of Chinese culture;  Understand the historical and cultural backgrounds of Chinese philosophy;  Evaluate how traditional philosophical thought can inform our conceptions of Chinese culture;  Illustrate how Chinese philosophy can be brought to analyze cultural and ethical issues in the contemporary world. ASSESSMENT SCHEME  Class participation and performance (10%)  In-class quiz (45%)  Final paper (45%) Detailed instructions will be given in due course.
