College of Architecture and Civil Engineering,Beijing University of Technology,Beijing 100124,China)Abstract: To study the axial compressive strength of the concrete filled composite steel tube short column which isthe concrete filled square steel tube reinforced with a central circular steel tube,10 specimens were tested under the axial compressive loading. Test results indicated that at the peak axial load the square steel tube had yielded in the vertical direction and did not yield in the lateral direction; the specimens failed in local buckling and tearing of square steel tube,crushing of concrete between the square steel tube and the circular steel tube. For most of the specimens even the longitudinal average strain reached 0. 11,the residual strength remained more than 70% of the peak compressive strength. The calculated compressive stiffness was approximately 83. 6% of the measured valueson the average. Assuming that the steel tubes do not contribute lateral confinement to the concrete,but providescompressive strength only,the predicted compressive strengths of the specimens has good agreement with the test results.Key words: concrete filled composite steel tube short colum
