Chapter 7 Discourse Analysis Objectives The students will learn the basic definitions of discourse and discourse analysis,information structure,differences between cohesion and coherence, discourse markers, conversational analysis, and critical discourse analysis. Students will be able to know the basic definition of discourse and discourse analysis; identify given and new information, topic and comment, and meanwhile understand the definition of contrast under information structure. distinguish cohesion and coherence, and understand the definitions of five items, i.e. reference, substitution, ellipsis, conjunction, and lexical cohesion. identify the discourse markers in a text and know their functions in context. distinguish the similarities and differences between conversational analysis and critical discourse analysis. Key Points 1) five types in information structure 2) differences between cohesion and coherence 3) conversational analysis and critical discourse analysis Procedure The 1st Period CONTENTS: 7.1 Discourse and discourse analysis 7.2 Information structure 7.1 Discourse and discourse analysis First, the teacher will distinguish the seven different items to help students get a solid understanding of the definition of discourse as follows: Discourse / text Paragraph Sentence Clause Phrase Word Morpheme Then, the teacher will ask students what each word means. After a short discussion in groups, the teacher will tell students the answers orally. In order to make students have a better understanding of discourse, the teacher will distinguish discourse and text as follows: Oral production Written production 1. Discourse = Text 2. Discourse vs. Text 3. Discourse Oral discourse Written discourse (i.e. text) 4. Text Oral text (i.e. discourse) Written text Finally, the teacher will provide with the definitions of discourse in different ways:
