Key: The family was homeless, jobless and penniless with three babies waiting to be fed. 4. How did the writer’s mother respond to the distress in their life? Key: She quit school to find a job as a grocer and moved the family to live with her brother Allen. To narrate the story, the author uses some quotations to help it unfold. Read through the text and find the quotations from his mother in pairs. Then discuss why his mother said so and make a report before the class. When we argue for a point of view, especially when we disagree with someone, we often start with a statement, which is very often denied and corrected. The three important elements — a statement, denial and correction — do not often appear separate paragraphs. I.
