Until in the 19th century, advances in manufacturing iron and steel as well as elevators, plumbing and electricity made it possible to support great amounts of weight without taking up much space. Economic factors drove the construction of buildings that went up instead of out; as precious downtown space became more expensive the only way for buildings to expand was skyward. So in the 20th century, skyscraper construction truly emerged. Two buildings begun in 1929, the Chrysler Building and the Bank of Manhattan Tower became the representative of this times, and the Chrysler reaching to a height of 1,046 feet. And after then, the “world’s tallest had been changed more and more quickly. In 1974, construction of Chicagos Sears Tower become “the world’s tallest” reaching 1,450-foot. Since the 1990s, the action shifted around the globe to Asia. Countries such as Malaysia and China constructing the worlds tallest building was a dramatic way for a city to announce its presence as a commercial and financial capital. For example, the Taipei 101 Tower, completed in 2003 and set to open in 2004, reach to 1,667 feet. Asia is a perilous region in which to erect tall buildings because it is beset with earthquakes and typhoons, so the new Asia skyscrapers inco
