It is my great pleasure and privilege to give the valedictory speech on behalf of my dearest classmates! It seems that everyone is tired of the generic valedictory speech and it is not easy to come up with an entertaining and memorable one. I searched internet for some videos and I found that to make their speeches more interesting, people crack jokes, quote hip-pop lines, sing a song with a guitar or compose a rap like Eminem. I am sorry that I can’t do these things. So I borrow one trick that I hope will work for me. Now, ladies and gentlemen, please put up your right hand, at the count of three, touch the shoulder of your neighbor. One, two, three. Now I am sure that everyone has been ‘touched’ by my speech. I still remember my first day in NIE. It was a beautiful day. When I was standing on the lush green lawn, I found myself in a mood for vacation and relaxation. I was impressed by the efficiency in the arrangement of a series of events, hearing NIE Director’s speech, meeting teachers and former students, learning how to use library and other facilities. I was also excited about the courses which were completely new to a literature student. What I found most striking was the multiethnic background and diverse educational background of our teachers. They come from China (including mainland, Hong Kong and Taiwan), Vietnam, Germany, Malaysia, the States, Australia and Singapore. They also received their degrees from prestigious universities in various countries. Their personal experiences not only showcase diversity and multiethnic harmony, two core ideas valued in Singapore but also enlighten us from a myriad of perspectives.
