His father was a flour miller who also served as a county official. His mother was a school teacher. Steinbeck attended Stanford University in California on and off for five years, studying literature and taking courses in writing. He worked at various unskilled jobs, acquiring knowledge about the lower levels of society and gaining admiration for the human qualities of the humble people. He wrote stories about the low and the oppressed. In 1939, “the Grapes of Wrath”, his masterpiece came out, which became a huge success. John Steinbeck was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1962 for his lifetime work but primarily for the great works he produced in the 1930’s.He died of a heart attack on December
