Mrs. Bennet in Pride and Prejudice Abstracts: Jane Austin has successfully created many characters in the novel Pride and Prejudice. Among so many roles, the mother-Mrs. Bennet was a character who always received many rebuke and blame. However, she was not without a single shining point despite her ignorance and foolishness. In this report, her characteristics will be analyzed both on her shortcomings and her pitiful features.Key words: Mrs. Bennet; education; mother; social status.Introduction: Pride and Prejudice, a classic novel written by Jane Austin, has been enjoying great popularity since 18th century. In the novel, the author depicted many vivid characters in Pride and Prejudice, among whom Mrs. Bennet –the mother was an indispensable one who was always criticized by readers for generations for her mean, narrow-mind nature and rude words and improper behavior. She was a small potato while through the description of her experience; Austin revealed women’s low social status at 18th century that they were always appendages of their husband. She was looked down on because of her ignorance and rudeness, while she was pitied by her life experience, which stood for women of a time.Analysis:Ⅰ. She was an idiot and unqualified mother. Mrs. Bennet was the mother of the heroin, who was “a women of mean understanding, little information, and uncertain temper” (Chap 1). Her ignorance and rudeness made herself a clown, being mocked at by people around her who suffered from her words. She was so ridiculous and inconsiderate that she asked Jane to ride a horse to Mr. Bingley’s under such a bad weather just for developing the relationship between the two young, as a result, her elder daughter caught a cold and was seriously ill. As to the situation she made, she showed little concern.“Oh! I am not afraid of her dying.
