Lee , Ph.D Professor of Microcosm University Chairman, International Life Enhancement Chinese Food Therapy Association E-mail: ottolee2008@ Abstract Originated in China, the guqin, literally ancient stringed instrument, has a history of more than 3,000 years. In addition to be played as a musical instrument, it has traditionally been favored by the people in ancient times as an instrument of great subtlety and refinement for Taoism. The playing technique of the guqin requires the player to touch the string with fingers of the left hand, pluck and lift freely on the surface board, creating subtle and crisp sound qualities. Another characteristic of the guqin is for the purpose of health enhancement, offering means of health enhancement similar to the theory of other traditional Chinese health enhancement methods such as calligraphy, Qigong (literally “breathing exercise”) and Taiji Quan, an internal Chinese martial art. For instance, both calligraphy and guqin emphasize on “shape and spirit” and “character”; and the relationship between deficiency and excess contrast in the practice. Calligraphy suggests the combined use of “square” and “circle” in the strokes while the guqin requires the harmony of “hardness” and “softness” in the tone. For Qigong, the breathing exercise involves “relaxation” and “static”, same as playing guqin. Both of them require calmness and focus when exercising breathing so as to achieve an unity of “Essence”, “Vitality or Qi” and “Spirit” ultimately. As Taiji Quan demands the overall balance of “Form”, “Consciousness”, “Qi” and “Strength”, the finger technique of the guqin also
