Introduce the course, the course material, the weekly teaching plan (15 mins)
Exploration of the concept “essay”(15 mins)
Study of two essays by J. B. Priestley (60 mins)
Teaching aims
To know the purposes of the course,
To know the origin and meaning of the concept “essay” (essai)
Read “Dreams” and “Making Stew” to see whether one likes it or not and why.
Teaching procedure
Part I
Introduce he course description to students;
Introduce the course materials, the book by Professor HuangYuanshen and the materials chosen by the instructor;
The weekly teaching plan and how the supplementary materials are to be used,
Part II
Introduction about the writer J. B. Priestley and his little book Delight
Study of the essay “Dreams”
Students read the essay (8 mins);
Questions from the teacher, such as, “How do you like this essay concerning dreams?”, “Have you ever read any other essays on dreams?”, “Do you often have dreams?”, “Do you like dreams you have?”, “What is the nature of dreams, according to your views?”
Word Study
Questions from students concerning the understanding of the essay, the metaphors from the essay;
Questions from the teaching, such as, “What are the linguistic characteristic of the essay, its sentence structure, its choice of words, its metaphor, the tone of the writer, etc?”
Study of the essay “Making Stew” (8mins)
Questions from the teacher, such as, “Have you ever cooked your own meals?”, “What dishes can you cook?”, “What is/ are the best dishes you can cook?”, “What is your greatest cooking time?”, “What do you think of the stew the writer prepared?” “Wold you like to have two helpings of it, like his own child?”
Word Study
Questions from students concerning the understanding of the essay, the metaphors from the essay;
Questions from the teaching, such as, “What are the linguistic characteristic of the essay, its sentence structure, its choice of words, its metaphor, the tone of the writer, etc?”
