Review of “Golden Door”Recently, there is an increasingly hot debate concerning immigration. We are inevitably confronted with it in our daily lives, including in book, in films and in dramas. Among them, Golden Door, directed by Emanuele Crialese, is a representative which vividly depicts the immigration of Italy in 1913. This name is derived from Jewish Emma Lazarus’s sonnet The?New?Colossus, “Give me your tired your poor,?Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,?The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.?Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me,?I lift my lamp beside the golden door(Lazarus,1949).?It is closely connected with this story, which is set at the beginning of the 20th century in Sicily. Salvatore, a poor farmer and widower, decides to emigrate to the US with all his family, including his old mother. They experienced all kinds of difficulties and finally arrived at America. However, once they landing, everything is different from their imagination. What’s waiting for them is not “there is enough milk for you and me to swim”, but new problems, such as racial discrimination and conflict. Although there are many highlights of this film, here I want to mention three points which impressed me the most. In the first place, the motivation of Italian immigrants is typical for American immigration. Even in today, It has important realistic meaning since it projects the thought of the most immigrants all around the world. In the beginning of this film, a wide-angle lens has adopted to perform the life of Salvatore, whose whole family live near the sea. It is a peaceful but poor place where everywhere are almost filled of rocks. They could lived an immutable life from generations to generations. However, everything has changed when preacher bring his picture to these people. Apparently, there exists a lot of contradictions. Firstly, Italian lives a poor life while American lives a rich life.
