China Abstract Objective To promote clinical doctors’ understanding of respiratory failure caused by hypothyroidism, reduce the rate of misdiagnosis, and increase the rate of cure. MethodsWe retrospectively analyzed the clinical data of six patients with respiratory failure caused by hypothyroidism in our hospital from November 2002 to January 2011. The patients were treated by invasive mechanical ventilation and levothyroxine. ResultsThe invasive mechanical ventilation time averaged 7 days, and hospitalization period ranged from 14 to 43 days with an average time of8.6 ± 14.4 days. Five patients were completely cured and one died. ConclusionEarly treatment with mechanical ventilation and levothyroxine can raise the curing rate of hypothyroidism combined with respiratory failure.
