Research on Enternal Life of Helen Burns in Jane Eyre By 09-4, Cao Sijia (曹思佳 No.20) A paper submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for literature class to Qinggong College Hebei United University November 2011 ABSTRACT Charlotte Bront? (1816-1855) was born at Thornton, in Yorkshire, England, one of the most famous English novelist. Her works are all about the struggle of an individual consciousness toward self-realization, about some lonely and neglected young women with a longing for love. Jane Eyre is the novel written by Charlotte Bront? according to her own experiences. And it is the most famous works of hers. In this novel, the author shapes a tough and independent woman who pursues true love and equality, and is a good example of all women. While, Helen Burns is another typical female character in the typical circumstance Lowood besides Jane. Helen represents a mode of Christianity that stresses tolerance and acceptance, in sharp contrast to Jane. This paper mainly will discuss the character of Helen Burns in the novel, and probe into the sincere friendship between Jane and Helen, the further meaning of “Resurgam” that engraved on her little marble tombstone, and even the great influence she exerted on Jane. The critical realists described with much vividness and great artistic skill the chief traits of the England society and criticized the capitalist system from a democratic viewpoint.
