地理类 （1） The total area of the United States is some 9.4 million square kilometers, which makes it the fourth largest country in the world. Its mainland covers a distance of nearly 5,000 kilometers from east to west, and about 2,500 kilometers from south to north. Surrounded by three oceans and the Gulf of Mexico, it has a long coastline(海岸线) of about 20 000 kilometers, which makes it one of the countries with the longest coastline in the world. To the east of the country lies the Atlantic which witnessed(目睹) large numbers of European immigrants(移民) sailing to their American colonies(殖民地).
