英语选修辞之一语双叙————parody
parody [p?r?d?]
Definition:
A piece of writing, music, acting, etc. that deliberately copies the style of sb/sth in order to be amusing. A parody (pronounced /?p?r?di/; also called send-up, spoof, pastiche or lampoon), in current usage, is an imitative work created to mock, comment on, or trivialise an original work, its subject, author, style, or some other target, by means of humorous, satiric or ironic imitation. As the literary theorist Linda Hutcheon puts it, parody … is imitation, not always at the expense of the parodied text. Another critic, Simon Dentith, defines parody as any cultural practice which provides a relatively polemical allusive imitation of another cultural production or practice. Parody may be found in art or culture, including literature, music (although parody in music has an earlier, somewhat different meaning than for other art forms), animation, gaming and film.Parody works only on people who know the original, and they have to know it intimately enough to appreciate the finer touches as well as the broad strokes of the imitation. Part of the enjoyment people take in parody is the enjoyment of feeling intelligent. Not everyone gets the joke: if you dont already know about the peach, you wont laugh at the prune. Its fantasy baseball for bookworms.(Louis Menand, Parodies Lost. The New Yorker, Sep. 20, 2010)
Examples:
①“Where there is a will, there is a lawsuit.”is a parody of “Where there is a will, there is a way.”
②“In economics all roads lead to socialism.”(肖伯纳语)is a parody of “All roads lead to Rome”
③In CET-6 , 1995 /1 the passage title is” My view on the Negative Effects of Some Advertisements”
one of the students write:
Some advertisements are to be tasted, other chewed, and a few digested. The reason for me to use a parody of Francis Bacon’s saying is because some advertisements are excellent work of arts, and some are of a lot of negative effects. The negative effects of some advertisements are actually becoming more and more se
