Instead of viewing, and accessing, physical devices directly, clients are presented with a logical abstraction of the environment – or a Global Unified Namespace. There are a couple of characteristics that the Global Unified Namespace ought to have: It should be standards-based in order to work with what’s already there (it’s really a federation of the namespaces that already exist). This also means that it must be truly heterogeneous, i.e. cannot only work with a particular protocol, or a particular vendor. It must also be truly “global” – it cannot be limited to a specific server or NAS head – as Brad said, in order to provide these benefits we need to abstract above the physical devices themselves. Therefore the Global Unified Namespace should span file servers, NAS platforms, vendors, and even data centers. The Global Unified Namespace brings two significant benefits to the enterprise: It simplifies access to data. You can provide a single access point to devices from different vendors or even different devices from the same vendor through a Global Unified Namespace. Clients no longer have to mount discrete file systems individually. We worked with a large Wall St. firm that had literally thousands of these mount points, and the consolidation of these into a manageable subset represented a significant simplification. It eliminates the disruption associated with storage management tasks. Without this technology any changes to the physical storage infrastructure causes outages – whether provisioning storage, decommissioning it, or moving data around.
