General Sewing Data General Sewing Data (GSD) was devised by Methods Workshop Limited and first published in 1978. It is now subject to continual development by General Sewing Data Limited. GSD is a Predetermined Motion Time System (PMTS) which has been specifically developed for the sewn products industry. It has been developed using an MTM data base, which allows for quick and accurate investigation and measurement of the work that we do. GSD is an easy to understand, easy to use, software driven technique for Methods analysis and the setting of accurate and competitive Time Standards within our industry. Methods can be analyzed across all operations, both sewing and non sewing e.g. cutting, examination, pressing and finishing. GSD recognizes commonly occurring human motion sequences encountered in the sewn products industry and describes these motions by means of codes. Each code has a predetermined time value described in Time Measurement Units (TMUs). The TMU value takes into account the distances moved and the degree of difficulty of the motions made. It is normally understood that there are 60 seconds per minute. However to allow for more accuracy it is necessary that the measurement factor be able to quantify motion to a very minute detail. For this purpose we use Time Measurement Units (TMUs). The benefit of such minute measurement is that it allows the practitioner to show distinct differences in the resultant SMV should the defined procedures not be followed.
