* * * (1874—1963) About the writer: ---- If America had a national poet in the 20th century, it is certainly Robert Frost. Robert .Frost,He was the most popular American poet of the twentieth century. His poetry focuses on the landscape and people in New England. He combined traditional verse forms with a clear American local speech rhythm, forming his own characteristics . “all poetry is a reproduction of the tones of actual speech.” 诗乃实际说话音调之复制品。 “Writing free verse is like playing tennis with the net down.” 诗歌如不讲韵律,就像打网球不设拦网一样。 “I’m always saying something that’s just the edge of something more.” Robert said: a. Frost’s nature poetry is closely related to his pastoralism(田园主义). He used symbols form everyday country life to express his deep ideas. b. Rejected the revolutionary poetic principles of his contemporaries(同代人), he used traditional forms such as the blank verse(无韵诗) , plain language(明语) of rural New Englanders. c. There is a steady tone of wry(歪曲的,讽刺的) humor, and a virtually inexhaustible(无穷无尽的) verbal grace. d. As a whole, Frost’s art is an act of clarification, which, without simplifying the truth, renders it in some degree accessible everyone. a. His poems mostly wrote about nature (influence from Wordsworth and Emerson) and New England landscape. b. He was famous for his deceptively(看似…的) simple style (reason for popular) c. He preferred to use symbolism to showing his poems’ deep meaning. d. He was likely to choose traditional forms for his poem, but the themes of his poems are mostly modern.
