Performance Management and Appraisal After studying this chapter, you should be able to: Describe the appraisal process. Develop, evaluate, and administer at least four performance appraisal tools. Explain and illustrate to the problems avoid in appraising performance. List and discuss the pros and cons of six appraisal methods. Perform an effective appraisal interview. Discuss the pros and cons of using different raters to appraise a person’s performance. Part 1: Basic concepts Part 2: An Introduction to Appraising Performance Part 3: Potential Appraisal Problems Part 4: How to Avoid Appraisal Problems Part 5: The Appraisal Interview Part 1: Basic concepts Performance appraisal Evaluating an employee’s current and/or past performance relative to his or her performance standards. Classroom Teaching Appraisal By Students Part 1: Basic concepts Performance management The process that consolidates goal setting, performance appraisal, and development into a single, common system in order to ensure that the employee’s performance is supporting the firm’s strategic goals. Includes practices: The manager defines the employee’s goals and work; Develops the employee’s capabilities; Evaluates and rewards the employee’s effort based on the performance standards. The Components of an Effective Performance Management Process Direction sharing Communicating the organization’s higher-level goals throughout the organization and then translating these into doable departmental goals. Role clarification Clarifying each employee’s role in terms of day-to-day work. Goal setting and planning Translating organizational and departmental goals into specific goals for each employee. Goal alignment Having a process in place that allows any manager to see the link between an employee’s goals and those of the department and organization.
