Audio-Visual Classes Unit: 5 Global Warning Background Notes 1- Global Warming It means the temperature of the Earth is getting higher than the average. In other words, the planet including; atmosphere, oceans and landmasses, is warming, and the main reason for this warming is the burning of the fossil fuels. 2- Greenhouse Gas Greenhouse gases are components of the atmosphere such as ; water vapor( H2O), carbon dioxide (CO2), methane(CH4), and ozone(O3). Some greenhouse gases occur naturally in the atmosphere, while others result from human activities. Certain human activities increase some of these gases into the atmosphere specially CO, CO2 ( carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide). 3- Greenland An island of Denmark located in the north of the Atlantic ocean and northwest of Canada. It is the largest island in the world, the total area of Greenland is about 2.17 million square kilometers and 1.8 of it is ice cap. 4- Canary in the Mine Coal miners used to take canary birds into the mines as a decoy ( a sign for coming dangers). If the canary died, then the miners realized that they were in a region of danger and they might also die of the poisonous gases under the ground. 5- North pole The North Pole is about (725 km) north of Greenland in the middle of the Arctic Ocean - the sea there has a depth of (4087 meters). Most of the time, the sea ice covers the North Pole but recently, water has been sighted at the exact location of the pole. If youre standing at the North Pole, all points are south of you (east and west have no bearing). The North Pole experiences six months of daylight and six months of darkness.
