By detailed description of the real conditions of the colonial and apartheid South African society, this novel reveals the con- straining, distorting and devastating nature of its ethical orders, and launched fierce condemna- tions. This paper makes a focused study on the novel’s narrator intrusion devices, and illustrates in details the ethical rhetoric effects: how they are effective in guiding the readers’ moral judg- ment, enriching the novel’s themes and consolidating the condemnations.
