The engine department The engine department on board is very important. Without it, a ship cannot sail at sea nor do anything else. In the engine department, there are engineer officers and engine room ratings. The engineer officers are Chief engineer, second engineer, third engineer, and fourth engineer. The engine room ratings includes chief motorman, motorman and oiler. The chief engineer is the head of the engine department. The work in the engine department is related to machines and equipment.
