A PROVEEN TOOLING SYSTEM FOR FLEXIBLE TURNING MACHINES ABSTRACT With today’s high cost of capital equipment and labor, it become increasingly important to utilize that equipment and labor more efficiently. In the case of turning, that means maximizing cutting time. This new system will reduce the time required for both. To resolve these problems in an environment where an even greater variety of work pieces, within a family of parts, must pass across any given turning machine requires unique, reliable, rigid, and rugged tooling that can repeatedly be changed easily and quickly. And this tooling must function effectively in a hostile environment of high temperatures, dirt, chips and coolant. This paper deals with a new system that uses standard tooling combined with the familiar tapered shank V-flange that is both compact and rigid. Three sizes, covering machines from 20 to 75 horsepower, have been developed and will be discussed in detail regarding the heavy metal-removal rates they are capable of bandling. A PROVEN TOOLING SYSTEM FOR FLEXIBLE TURNING MACHINES Introduction With today’s high cost of capital equipment and labor, it becomes increasingly important to utilize that equipment and labor more efficiently. That means maximizing cutting time. Recent developments in rigid, high-horsepower machine tools and in coated carbide and ceramic cutting tools have reduced cutting times to the point that they now consume, on the average, no more than 11%-30% of available machine time. The reminder of the time is made up of such tasks as part handling, tool change, setup and gaging, and in incomplete use of shifts. A quick-change tooling system can reduce the time requires for two of these noncutting tasks, setup and tool change. These two tasks currently represent a percentage of available machine time that can be greater than cutting time.
