Morton, M.D. After reading this article, the radiologist should be able to discuss the indications for and the efficacy of FDG PET imaging for oncologic disease. The Centers for Medicare Medicaid Services has approved FDG PET imaging and reimburses for its use in the following oncologic applications: • Initial diagnosis, staging, and restaging for colorectal cancer, non–small cell lung cancer, lymphoma, esophageal cancer, head and neck cancer, and melanoma; A • Staging and restaging for breast and cer- vical cancer; • Evaluation of malignant potential for a solitary pulmonary nodule; and • Evaluation of papillary thyroid cancer that has been shown to be non-iodine-avid.
