It coincided with the inauguration of the Casimir Borkowski Scholarship. The introduction is autobiographical and traces our accidental encounter in 1949, after our graduation from Columbia University that year. Our forty-year friendship continued through graduate school with digressions until receiving doctorates at the University of Pennsylvania under Zellig Harris, Casimir in 1958 and myself in 1961. In the fifties, Cas worked for Leon Dostert at Georgetown University in the project involving mechanical translation of Russian to English. After leaving Penn he worked at IBM in Yorktown Heights and then taught at the University Pittsburgh both in the computer science and information science programs. After commenting on the MT problem, the talk segues to work on algorithmic historiography and its relation to Information Retriev
