* The balance between the importance of these two reasons (for not eating healthy and for eating healthy), will determine how willing the client is to change at this moment in time. * In other words, the client considers staying the same more important than changing. This means they are definitely not considering change at this time. They are happy where they are and change is one of the farthest things from their mind. Your challenge as their nurse aide will be to increase the importance they give to reason for change and decrease the importance they give to their reasons for not changing. * What do they think has to change in their life and surroundings? There are any number of questions that you can ask that could help your client think more seriously about lessening the importance of their reasons for not changing. Not a 0…there’s hope * * If the importance number is not zero, they must be aware of some of the reasons for changing. These reasons are important enough for them to give a 3 or a 2 instead of a zero. Your challenge as the “coach” is to find out what these important reasons for change are. * Being “on the fence” makes it difficult for the client to move toward taking action for change. They can’t make a decision because they are torn in two opposite directions, one toward change and one toward not taking any action. * This is the same strategy that was used for the client whose reasons for not changing are much more important than their reasons for changing. * Clients who are this motivated, are ready to take action. First though, determine the level of their ability and confidence to make a change. * If your client could increase their confidence and ability they may be more motivated to change. But first, find out how confident and able they are to start an action that could lead to change. * Ask to score as he might score * Some examples of increasing confidence could be: “Having a supporting person with me (you, the nurse aide fo
