Human Resources: Ethnic Minorities in America
1. African Americans
African Americans had always been the largest group in the US. There were about 39.9million African Americans living in the US, it’s about 12.9 percent of the total population.
1.1 Out of Africa and Thrown into Slavery
In the early 1800s, the growing of cotton became the work of 60percent of all slaves in the America. By 1860, the slave population had grown to just under 4million. It was not until the conclusion of the Civil War that the whole slave issue was finally brought to an end.
1.2 Up from Slavery
Blacks left home in large numbers and migrated to urban ares in the south, the North, and the West. The urban problems as poverty, unemployment, overcrowded housing, violence and crime became unceasingly associated with Black communities. Then, black Americans started the Civil Rights Movement.
1.3 Struggles for Civil Rights
As black Americans wouldnt settle for anything less than a full citizenship, tension between whites and Blacks started to rise. In their own different ways, both efforts contributed to the black struggle for racial equality in the US. Such efforts have brought about sustained success for African Americans and also change the white peoples perception of blacks.
1.4A Dream to be Realized
70 percent of black children are born to unmarried women. The fathers and sons who would demonstrate positive role models for African Americans, and who would inspire people to take leadership roles and make a difference in their home communities. Therefore, racial and cultural separatism is a stronger force with them than with other racial and ethic groups such as Hispanics, Native American, or Asians.
2. Lations /Hispanics
The era that began with World War Ⅱwitnessed Latino presence in the US, whose importance is revealed in the immigration figures. It has been accepted by Americans to use such a term to refer to American residents from many countries.
