丰田汽车在欧洲的生产系统:一个不同的故事 The Toyota Production System in Europe:a different story

The Toyota Production System in Europe: a different story Tommaso Pardi (CSU-CNRS-GERPISA) Towards a dynamic and contextualised analysis of teamwork Most of the existing literature onTPS, Lean Production and Sociotechnical models tends to rely on static frameworks (ex: typologies, Abo, 1993; Durand et ali, 1998; Kumon and Abo, 2004) If a dynamic approach is present, most of the time it falls into functionalist narratives like the Empowerment (Womack et ali, 1990; Florida, 1993; Adler, 1995) and the Management by stress views (Parker and Slaughter, 1998; Babson, 1994). An alternative approach Technical dynamics and social dynamics must be analysed as interdipendent: can the technical viability of TPS be achieved if the system is not socially sustainable? Both technical and social dynamics must be contextualised in order to understand in which way they interact, and what are the factors affecting this interaction in terms of viability, sustainability and efficiency: are teamwork dynamics different when the contexts of production are different? And if yes, why? The case studies Four years on-going project of research on the two main European transplants of Toyota: Toyota Motor Manufacturing UK (Burnaston) - 1992 - 4000 employees - Avensis Corolla Toyota Motor Manufacturing France (Valenciennes) - 2001 - 3000 employees - Yaris On contextualising TPS and lean production General social dynamics have been rarely contextualised, but only as proxy of resistance against the introduction of lean practices. Technical dynamics in TPS have attracted even less attention: the system is supposed to be viable in all market and industrial conditions (Womack, 1990; Florida, 1993) Contextualising TPS: the viability conditions The main drive of TPS is the permanent reduction of cost through the sistematic elimination of any form of waste (muda) The target is to have just enough resources for the volume of production demanded The problem is that real demand fluctuates, so demand needs
