He though he had reached Asia and did not know he had landed a new continent! Question1: Why Columbus risked his life to sail so far? Answer: 1 The influence of the Renaissance the development of natural science, the improvement of sailing technology, the accumulation of geographical knowledge 2 The Desire for the new colony and wealth Europeans wanted to trade with Asia businessmen directly the desire for gold, silver, precious stones, and spices Question2: Why people call the new continent America ? Answer: Ameriga Vespucci proved that the land was a new continent.Therefore, the land was named America after him. Ⅱ.The colonization of the New Continent In 1602, 101 of pilgrims sailed to the New World, they arrived at Plymouth and built the Plymouth colony.The puritans,unlike the Pilgrims who were artisans and peasants,were wealthy, well-educated gentlemen. The Puritans did not allow religious dissen.The coonies were built with a number of features which would play a role in forming the American character.They were representative from of government, rule of law, respect of individual rights, riligious tolerance and a strong of individual enterprise.
