SMU Deductive Research Please do the following: Read “Ruby’s final Draft” in the chapter The Deductive Research paper by Mason, N and Otte,G (1994) pages378-385. The challenge for the Research Paper… To make a premise that is believable and acceptable to your Reader. E.g: Language and content shape a professional identity that changes over time. What is the premise?...A and B does change over time The arguments that you present in your paper will show how both the elements change over time. You will also show how alternative positions on the subject do or do not matter( the critique of your literature) What does projecting a premise do? Language and content shape a professional identity that changes over time. Since too much is dependant on speculation and one’s own judgment -this RP will require the writer to convince the Reader through weighing arguments and counterarguments. Checking a Topic’s Viability Does the topic have some bearing on you personally? Do you have something to say other than what you have already heard or read about the topic? Do you have some respect for your opposition? Checking the Resources Please check at your library and on the internet whether you find articles that contain good arguments and counterarguments . Be focused about it as reading a book by its cover never really helps. If you are really stuck for ideas try attacking the reference list provided at the end of the scholarly journals provided in your reading pack. Subject Positions Proposition Opposition Uncover opinions Uncover premises stated and unstated Try and bridge the contradictions Search out the contradictions Detail out consequences if you think your premises are not going to be followed Pursue consequences; so see if there are contradictions available here. Find choices that support your premise Make the audience aware that choices here are all faillable.
