Lecture 5 Genitive Noun Formation of genitive nouns a) The genitive is formed in writing by adding -’s to singular nouns and to those plural nouns that do not end in -s,  eg: Formation of genitive nouns b) Plural nouns ending in -5 take an apostrophe as genitive marker, eg: Formation of genitive nouns c) In compound nouns or a post-modified noun phrase, the genitive ending is added to the end of the compound or to the end of the noun phrase, eg: Formation of genitive nouns d) In coordinate nouns, the genitive ending is added to each of the coordinate elements when denoting respective possession, and only to the last coordinate element when denoting common posses-sion. Compare: Formation of genitive nouns e) In the construction of “noun phrase + appositive”, the genitive ending is added to the end of the appositive, or both to the end of the noun phrase and to the appositive, eg: Formation of genitive nouns f )In personal names ending in sibilant / z /, the genitive end-ing can either be ’s or an apostrophe only, but it can only be ‘s when personal names end in other sibilant sounds, eg: Meanings of genitive nouns a) Possessive genitive, eg: Meanings of genitive nouns b) Subjective genitive, eg: Meanings of genitive nouns c) Objective genitive, eg; Meanings of genitive nouns d) Genitive of origin, eg: Meanings of genitive nouns e) Descriptive genitive, eg: Meanings of genitive nouns f) Genitive of time, distance, measure, value, etc, eg; Uses of genitive nouns Genitive nouns are mostly used as central determiners and therefore perform the same function as “possessive determiners” (traditionally called “possessive pronouns”), eg: Uses of genitive nouns As central determiner, genitive nouns can’t collocate with other central determiners, nor can they be preceded by a premodifier. Uses of genitive nouns This, however, does not apply to some other genitive nouns such as the descriptive genitive and the genitive that denotes time, distance, value or measure. These gen
