For Americans the speaker who uses more eye contact seems more relaxed, more informal, and yet more authoritative. In this way the audience feels that the speaker is speaking directly to each individual. In many cultures averting the eyes is a sign of humility and respect. This has caused many misunderstandings in relationships between American teachers and Asian students in schools.
