College of Env ir onment and Civ il Eng ineer ing , Cheng du University of Technology , Cheng du 610059, China; 3. nstitute of Rock and Soil M echanics , the Chinese A cademy of Sciences , Wuhan 430071, China) Abstract: Various geological hazards and environmental effects induced by coal underground m ining are presented, including ground subsidence, crack, landslides, collapse, debris flow , loss of w ater and soil, destruction of building and cropland, atmos- phere pollution etc.T hey lead to ecological degradation and environment al pollut ion in mining area and restrict regional sustain- able development .The form mechanism and current status of these hazards and effects are analysed and described. In the end the prevention and control countermeasures w ere brought forw ard to prevent and contol hazards and effects. The main countermeas- ures includes government measures, subsidence prediction, engineering treatment techniques, land reclamation, prot ection of sur- face buildings, land reclamation , w ater and soil conservation etc. Green mining and systemic prevention a
