The EPS control unit decreases the output of the EPS motor when the steering wheel is on the maximum lock position. This protects the EPS motor and EPS control unit from overloading. When the overload protection is activated, the assist torque gradually decreases and the steering wheel turning force becomes heavy. The normal assist torque is reactivated when by not steering. In case of an error in the electrical system, the fail-safe function stops output signals to the EPS motor. The steering will become heavy as there is no power assistance. CONSULT-III can be used for self-diagnosis Torque sensor is hall effect type and doesn’t need steering angle value Outline of logic The EPS unit provides assistance to the driver by applying a current to an electric motor which in turn drives the steering gear The EPS requires the following 4 major inputs in order to function: 1. Driver torque - This is measured using a torque sensor built into the column assembly 2. EPS motor rotational speed - This is measured using Hall sensors within the motor Housing 3.
