Each had been awarded project grant funding by the Wellcome Trust under its newly established Biomedical Ethics Programme. Both research projects involved using qualitative methods to help inform healthcare ethics. Professor Glover, a philosopher, wanted to learn more about qualitative approaches from experienced practitioners. Rather than hold a one-to-one meeting, it was felt that there might be a general interest in this topic and so the idea of the meeting was born. The report does not seek to present the definitive story on qualitative research. As the following pages make clear, the very idea of a definitive account is problematic, for qualitative research, its benefits and limits and the choice of most appropriate methods, are the subject of lively debate within and outside the social sciences. We hope it will stimulate further development of qualitative approaches and a wider understanding of them. The report has been subject to the normal process of peer review.
