And describe the characteristics of each daughter with ONE or TWO words. 1. Knowing the Bennets Jane – handsome; Elizabeth – quick-witted; Mary – bookish; Kitty, Lydia – energetic, overconfident 2. Knowing the Couple Mr. Bennet likes to tease his wife and daughters. a person who has good sense, dry wit, a sarcastic sense of humour, a detached attitude self-possession 2. Knowing the Couple Mrs. Bennet is consumed by the desire to marry off her daughters and seems to care for nothing else in the world . a woman who is foolish, frivolous, noisy, overnervous, indulgent 3. Understanding the theme The famous opening line accomplishes two main purposes: 1. It indicates the novels central subject of marriage, along with the financial considerations usually involved in it. 2. It also sets the tone of the novel: humorous, light, satirical 4. Appreciating the Humour For example, the dialogue between Mr. and Mrs. Bennet: 1) Para. 7, 8, 9 2) Para. 17, 19 3) Para. 25, 29 5. Picturing the society In Pride and Prejudice Jane Austen presents a vivid view of 19th century life in England. What social customs and traditions of the day can you learn from the novel? Visiting p22: “But, my dear, you must indeed go and see Mr. Bingley when he comes into the neighbourhood.” In this society there are strict rules for visiting people one does not know. In the case being discussed here, since Mr. Bingley is a man, Mr. Bennet should make the acquaintance first. Young unmarried women would never visit an unmarried and unrelated young man on their own.
