Preview??? Feelings, like words and actions, also communicate messages. Sometimes feelings say more than just words can tell us. The way words are spoken in English often tells us how the speaker feels. This expression of feeling can make the learning of spoken English very challenging. Knowing and understanding the feelings behind the words makes a huge difference in successful English communication. In this unit, feelings tell us a lot about the people we meet. First, we read about a sad, lonely woman who experiences the pain of loss as she remembers how her wedding day sent its spell over the rest of her marriage. Next, two workers express how annoyed and angry they feel about how they are treated by others. Finally, a man humours us with a funny account of his history of moving. How do these writers communicate these very different feelings? The Widow ? ? Alone now, the widow reads considerably. She used to underline favorite passages to share with her husband. Now, in a notebook, she stores quotations like this one from Elizabeth Jolleys Cabin Fever: I experience again the deep-felt wish to be part of a married couple, to sit by the fire in winter with the man who is my husband.
