ESSENTIAL ELEMENTS of a WORK-OUT ACTIVITY People who do the work develop the improvements. Decision makers present and provide immediate closure (Yes/No/More Data by When) Passionate problems or projects Start with “low hanging fruit” Issues clear and specific Every issue has a champion WORK-OUT ROLES Sponsor: the Champion of Change. This manager who strongly supports the W-O and can supply the people and other resources needed to attack the issues and implement the solution. The sponsor will participate in the planning, will kick off the W-O session and will come to the final presentation of the recommendations to approve or disapprove the proposals. Facilitator: This person who plans and organizes the W-O and leads the group interactions using team and process tools. The facilitators remains neutral about the “content” of the W-O, while proving leadership for the “process” of the W-O. Planning Team Members (optional) : Sometimes a group works with the facilitator to select the issues and participants of the W-O. Participants: Those who attend the W-O should be people who “own” the issues being worked. The best participants are those who do the work being discussed and will be ones to implement the change. Issues should be selected that participants will care about. THREE KEY PHASES of the PROCESS Pre-Work Work-Out Session Follow-up Pre-Work… Is there support for this right now? Do the participants share the values important to Work-Out’s success? What is the goal of the Work-Out session? Who is the sponsor?
