Text I:The Story of an Eyewitness (The text is an autobiographical narration of a successful actor and television announcer who had severe stutter in his early childhood.) 2. Text II: Memories of the San Francisco Earthquake and Fire (The text draws us a picture of the San Francisco Earthquake and Fire from the eye of a kid and shows us how the city survived the disaster.) 3. Exercises: comprehension of the texts, vocabulary, grammar, translation, etc Text Analysis The text can be divided into three parts. Part I, i. e. Paragraphs 1-3, gives a brief introduc-tion to what happened in San Francisco in 1906. Part II, i. e. Paragraphs 4-13, gives a detailed description of what the author saw on Wednesday morning, afternoon and night. Part III, i. e. Paragraphs 14-16, tells the reader what the author witnessed on the next day. Paragraph 1-3 The first three paragraphs serve as a general introduction to what happened in San Francisco in 1906. Questions: 1) Why does the San Francisco earthquake of April 18, 1906 rank among the most destruc-tive earthquakes of all time? Because this earthquake brought hundreds of millions of dollars worth of damage and completely destroyed the famous modem imperial city of San Francisco. The only dwelling houses left were those on its outskirts. 2) What rhetorical devices did the author use to describe the damage to all sections of San Francisco in Paragraph 2? He used such rhetorical devices as inversion and parallelism. 3) Which brought more destructive damage to the city, the earthquake or the following conflagration? As the first paragraph suggests, the earthquake shook down thousands of dollars worth of walls and chimneys, but the conflagration burned up hundreds of millions of dollars worth of property.
