Learning Words Key Terms connotation collocation loan word association continuum equivalent specialist schema ...less obvious meanings of a word ...the way words are used together ...word borrowed from another language ...things a word is linked with ...a scale of closely related things ...a word that has the same meaning ...related to a special subject ...background knowledge Knowing a word involves being able to... recognize and recall it, pronounce it clearly, use it with proper grammar, use it with the right words (collocation), use it with the right level of formality, write it, and be aware of its connotations/associations. Active or passive knowledge? Being able to recognize a word and understand it in context involves passive knowledge. If we can pronounce the word but not spell it, our active knowledge is only partial. Of course, there are degrees of active/passive knowledge on a continuum, along which one can advance. There are some specialist words for which passive knowledge may be enough. Memorizing words in groups. Long lists of unconnected words are difficult to memorize. Abstract words for which we do not have clear schema are also difficult. Context can make words easier to remember. How context helps. The story in your textbook demonstrates that the meanings of words can become obvious through context. What do the following nonsense words stand for: debbalsted, gannerd, wenterfy, prockle? Even words that do not follow normal word formation rules, such as loan words, or words for which one’s language has no equivalent ca
