Active or passive knowledge? Being able to recognize a word and understand it in context involves passive knowledge. If we can pronounce the word but not spell it, our active knowledge is only partial. Of course, there are degrees of active/passive knowledge on a continuum, along which one can advance. There are some specialist words for which passive knowledge may be enough. Memorizing words in groups. Long lists of unconnected words are difficult to memorize. Abstract words for which we do not have clear schema are also difficult. Context can make words easier to remember. How context helps.
