The work details Thoreaus experiences over the course of two years in a cabin he built near Walden Pond , a midst woodland owned by his friend and mentor Emerson. It is part personal declaration of independence, voyage of spiritual discovery, and manual for self reliance. Where I Lived, and What I Lived For tells why Thoreau went to live in the woods. He went to woods because he wished to live fully and understand essential truths. Throughout his life,he reduced his needs to the simplest level and managed to live on very little money, thus maintaining his independence.Thoreau did not intend to live as a hermit, for he received visitors regularly, and returned their visits. He hoped to isolate himself from society to gain a more objective understanding of it. Simple living and self-sufficiency were Thoreaus other goals, and the whole project was inspired by transcendentalist philosophy. As Thoreau made clear in his book, his cabin was not in wilderness but at the edge of town. His time at Walden was his most productive as a writer。Winston Churchill was a British politician, best known as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom during the World War II. He is generally regarded as one of the most important leaders in modern British and world history.
