She was born in Neepawa, Manitoba, a province in SC Canada, and was educated at the University of Manitoba. After marrying an engineer, she moved with her husband to Africa and lived there fro a number of years. She began her literary career in 1954 by editing A tree of Poverty, a collection of Somali poetry and prose. In 1960 she published her novel, This Side of Jorden, with a background set in Ghana as the country’s independence was drawing near. A book of short stories, The Tomorrow-Tamer (1963) has a similar setting. T
