NGN are based on the layered approach wherein services provision is separated from the network infrastructure. These are enabling the operators to increase their depleting ARPU by providing multiple and advanced value added services in addition to plain (vanila) voice. The incumbent operators are going for NGN by replacing their existing networks to compete on the technology front and being able to provide new value added services, cutdown on Opex as well as to make their network future- proof. Emerging NGN Services – EOIP Fixed Mobile Convergence (FMC) FMC is convergence of access for telephony wherein as per the convenience of the users an mobile call can be delivered on fixed phone or can be terminated through fixed Broadband network on mobile phone. Main motivation for this is :- 1. Spectrum shortage leading to congestion and reduced QoS. (It is believed that 70% of the time a mobile call recipient is on a fixed location/Hot Spot) 2. Mobile subscribers saturation, Fixed lines decline (Battle for in-building minutes) 3.
