Zunyi is located in the northern part of Guizhou Province, in the northeastern part of Yungui Plateau. It is the biggest of Guizhous nine prefecture-level divisions, and covers 30,762 sq km, 17.5% of provinces total area. Its population was 7.56 million in 2009。 This prefecture-level city played an important role in the revolutionary history of China. In 1935, Mao Zedong was first elected to the leadership of the Communist Party of China during the Long March at the Zunyi Meeting. Zunyi has a middle-subtropical, humid monsoon climate with plenty of rain, and no extremely hot summer or bitter cold winter. The average temperature is 15.1°C, while the average annual precipitation totals 1,000-1,300 mm. Zunyi is rich in natural resources. Forests cover 32.5% of the citys lands. Average annual runoff of the surface water amounts to 17.9 billion steres, accounting for approximately 17% of the provinces total. In addition, Zunyi is replete with mineral resources such as manganese, pyrite, silica, nickel, molybdenum and barium. Proven reserves of manganese and coal amount to 50 billion tons and 6.6 billion tons, ranking first and third in Guizhou, respectively. Additionally, Zunyi is widely appraised as the Northern Barn of Guizhou, since grain production of the city contributed approximately one fourth of the provinces total. Zunyi is one of the transportation hub cities in Northern Guizhou. The Zuiyi-Guiyang Expressway and Chengdu-Guiyang Railway run through the city. Economic Features Zunyi realized GDP of RMB 90.87 billion in 2010, representing a rise of 14.7% year on year. The citys GDP accounted for approximately 25% of Guizhous total and ranked second after Guiyang, the capital city of the province. The agricultural sector generated value-added output of RMB 14 billion in 2010, accounting for 15.4% of the citys GDP. Secondary industry (industry and construction), the largest contributor to the citys economy, realized value-added industrial output of RMB 36.78 billion
