Elie Wiesel’s “Night” The Holocaust Developed by Losten Found Teacher Overview Students will gather information about Elie Wiesel and the Holocaust. The purpose of the lesson is for students to gain a deeper understanding of the holocaust through sources other than Elie Wiesel’s “Night.” Students will be required to utilize several different sources including the internet, books, movies, articles, and artwork to better comprehend the severity of the Holocaust and to apply moral reasoning to genocide that still occurs today. 8th English/ Language Arts Class Academic Standards for Reading, Writing, Speaking, and Listening 1.1.8A, 1.1.8B, 1.1.8.D, 1.1.8.G, 1.1.8.H, 1.2.8.A, 1.2.8.B, 1.3.8.A, 1.3.8.F, 1.4.8B, 1.4.8.C, 1.4.8D, 1.5.8.A, 1.5.8.B, 1.5.8.C, 1.6.8.A, 1.6.8.B, 1.6.8.C, 1.6.8.D, 1.6.8.E, 1.8.8.C Students will be given class time to go to the library, computer lab, or classroom computer to conduct research, collaborate project ideas, and create Power Point presentations. Students will also have access to the portfolio before, after, and during class and with permission may take home some of the items for a limited period of time. Introduction As a class we have read Elie Wiesel’s “Night.” In eloquent, unflinching scenes, Night recalls Wiesels survival as a teenager in Nazi death camps. Each chapter raises questions that have haunted the world since Hitlers rise: How could such a staggering number of innocents have lost their lives at the command of one regime? What does it take to survive when body, mind, and spirit are brutalized for months, even years? Why does God seem to forsake those who suffer? For anyone seeking a deeper understanding of the Holocaust, or of the nature of humanity itself, Night is essential reading. In his Nobel lecture, presented in 1986, Wiesel writes of the power of memory, including the notion that the memory of death can serve as a shield against death.
