Chapter 1 Review What Is TCP/IP? The Internet Protocol, or IP, manages the routing of network transmissions from sender to receiver, along with issues related to network and computer addresses, and much more A working understanding of where TCP/IP comes from, and what motivated its original design, can enhance one’s understanding of this essential collection of protocols (often called a protocol suite) The Origins and History of TCP/IP In 1969, an obscure arm of the united states department of defense (DoD), known as the advanced research projects agency (ARPA), funded an academic research project for a special type of long-haul network, called a packet-switched network In a packet-switched network, individual chunks of data (called packets) can take any usable path between the sender and receiver The network built as a result of this project is known as the ARPANET Meet the Standards Groups that Manage TCP/IP The standards groups that are involved with TCP/IP are as follows: Internet Society (ISOC) Internet Architecture Board (IAB) Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) Internet Research Task Force (IRTF) The 4 layers of TCP/IP TCP/IP Transport Layer Functions Network layer provides hop-by-hop service (IP) Transport layer provides end-to-end service (UDP and TCP) Its responsibilities of the transport layer protocol is to create a _____ _ communication. Domain name system A distributed database system that provides mapping between IP addresses and hostnames. Any application can call a standard library function to look up an IP address corresponding given hostname. Encapsulation Demultiplexing When an Ethernet frame is received all the headers are removed in appropriate places. Each protocol looks at certain identifiers in its header to determine which protocol on next upper layer receives data. E.g. IP detect if packet should be given to UDP or TCP. Combining the various sources of outgoing data into a single output data stream is called multiple
