A Contrastive Study of the Chinese Versions of the Old Man and the Sea from the Perspective of Functionalism Abstract Functionalism is a school of translation theories which emerged and then developed rapidly in Germany ever since the 1970s. The core factor of functionalism is Skopostheorie which raised the statuses of the translator and the target text. In Skopostheorie, the translator chooses the translation process and the translation method according to the Skopos (Skopos is a Greek word for “purpose”). There are a great number of researches and papers studying functionalism while the majority of which only focus on its application to the translations of instructions, advertisements, news texts and suchlike. The studies conducted on its application to the area of literary translation are relatively fewer. What’s more, many scholars even doubt the applicability of functionalism to literary translation.
