Fluid Mechanics Part A
1. Introduction
Whether studying the dynamic loads on offshore structures, or, predicting the motions
of structures steadily advancing in a seaway, it is essential that one understand the
fundamentals of fluid mechanics. Having introduced some very basic concepts the
subject of water waves will be used to demonstrate application of the basic theory.
This will also allow us to gain an appreciation of wave properties prior to
investigating their interaction with stationary or advancing structures. This part of the
lecture course is aimed at providing
(i) The basic fluid mechanics concepts necessary to formulate
governing equations and boundary conditions associated with free-
surface flows of inviscid and incompressible fluids subject to
irrotational flow.
(ii) The necessary insight to readily appreciate the meaning of a
progressive regular and harmonic wave and
(iii) Simple ways of deriving properties of progressive water waves.
As a start we will commence with a thorough consideration of what we mean by the
phrase ―an inviscid and incompressible fluid subject to irrotational fluid‖. Then we
will consider the term ―a progressive regular harmonic wave‖. In each case simple
plain English will be used to develop each concept. Mathematical representations of
these concepts will follow from verbally developed models. That is, the mathematics
follows from clear statements of the physics using plain English.
