Teaching Vocabulary 词汇教学 Objective of the lesson: 1. To know what to teach in terms of vocabulary 2.To become familiar with interactive activities that engage and involve learners. 3. To teach vocabulary learning strategies. I. Vocabulary Development What does knowing a word involve? I. Vocabulary Development According to Hedge (2000), vocabulary learning involves the two aspects of meaning. The 1st aspect involves the understanding of its denotative and connotative meaning. The 2nd aspect involves understanding the sense relations among words. I. Vocabulary Development Denotative meanings: refer to those words that we use to label things as regards real objects, such as a name or a sign, etc. in the physical world. For example: I. Vocabulary Development Connotative meanings (affective meanings): show people’s emotions and attitudes towards what the word refers to. For example: In English In Chinese Woman unmarried married I. Vocabulary Development Sense relations: refer to words that co-occur with high frequency including collocations, synonyms, antonyms, and hyponyms. For instance, heavy (never say) II.
